Money Smart Week

For the first time, the Independence Public Library is participating in Money Smart Week, from April 20-27! Money Smart Week® is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances by providing free seminars and activities. The library is working with the ISU Extension in Buchanan County and Money Smart through the Cedar Valley to offer four events in Independence.

Kids ages 4-10...hear Ben Franklin talk about how important it is to save and invest wisely.  He will also hand out a "Be Money Smart" comic book to each child.

Freese is from US Bank in Waterloo, and will speak on Ad Matching and Couponing.  She will show you how to cut your grocery bill in half.

The Spending Strike with Sarah Baker

Baker will share ways to spend less, save more, and live better.  She's written a book based on her experiences during her family's month long Spending Strike!

Protecting your Resources: When should you consider buying long-term care insurance?

Amber Hunt she will discuss the costs of short- and long-term care insurance.  She will also explore scenarios when long-term care insurance is a good investment and the difference between Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans.

More Opportunities

There are many other worthwhile events in the Cedar Valley for Money Smart Week.  Topics like teaching children to save, investment planning, Social Security, credit, and energy savings are all being offered in various locations.   Find out more by going to the website www.moneysmartweek.org.

Speaking of finances, the library will also have a panel discussion of investors at the library on May 14 at 6:30 pm.  Several local professionals will talk about what you need to know and answer questions from the audience.  This will be the final program for our Smart Investing Series.
